2014 AFC School (Individual) Championships - Brisbane

2014 AFC Schools (Individual) Championships

The AFC School Fencer Championships offers the opportunity for school-age fencers to represent their State in a representative level competition.
Competition Format
Each State is permitted to nominate a maximum of four fencers in each event, and each fencer is only permitted to compete in one event. Each event consists of an individual competition immediately followed by a team competition.
There are two age categories:
Intermediate – students up to the third year of secondary school in their respective states
Senior – open to any school student
This means that States can send a total of sixteen athletes in each weapon and gender (eight in each category). The two categories will be fenced as separate events, unless there are insufficient competitors, in which case the fields will be combined but separate medals will be awarded.
Equipment Requirements
FIE Standard blades are required and must be in good safe condition. FIE Standard equipment (masks and protective clothing) is recommended for all competitors.  However, the minimum requirement is 1600N for masks, 800N for underplastrons (required), and 350N for jackets and breeches. For School events, the AFF does not require fencers to use conductive bibs in Foil. Fencers will need to present masks, weapons, wires and lames to Weapons Control before the event, and weapons will be subject to testing on the strip as in other AFF competitions.
Timetable
Start times are for the individual competition – the team competition will commence directly after the conclusion of each individual event

FIE Congress - Rule Changes

2014 Rule Changes

During the 2013 FIE Congress, a number of rule changes were introduced, effective as at 1 January in most cases.  Subject to selected local changes, the AFF uses the FIE rules.  Fencers should note the following, referring to the FIE rules noted below for the exact text of the rule or rule change:
*  In foil, beats on the lower third of the blade will now be considered parries by the opponent - t.56.4.
*  The absence of blade contact will no longer be a criterion for non-combativity - t.87.4.2.
*  There will be no penalty for simple corps a corps for foil and sabre, but the referee still calls "Halt!" - t.20.2 / t.20.3.
*  Visor masks will be forbidden in all weapons - Material Rules Annex A.2.1.2.
*  Insulting a referee will be an immediate Group 4 offence (Black card) - t.82.3(b).
*  Violently or dangerously throwing one's mask is a Group 4 offence (Black Card) - t.87.3(b)
*  Fencers passing each other on the strip must do so completely before the referee calls "Halt!" - t.21.3
*  Foil and sabre fencers must have a spare mask wire at the side of the strip - t.45.
*  Foils and epees must be made of maraging steel - this is generally the case at the moment.
